Reflection – Life in Retrospect

Reflection - Life in Retrospect

Life is about moving forward, but the true meaning of life can often be found by reflecting on our past experiences. Our past is a valuable source of wisdom that can help us make important decisions for our future. By taking some time to reflect on how things have been so far, we can gain insights that can guide us towards a more fulfilling life.

In the Bible, the prodigal son didn’t take the time to reflect on his life until the time that the Bible said he came to himself. It is written that “When he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving!'” (Luke 15:17).

Continuing to the next verse, we see a sudden transformation in his mindset. He said, “I will arise and go to my father.” Wow! This marked the first time he took a reflective look at his life since he started to live life on his own terms. Remarkably, as he came to himself, he found clarity and instantly knew what to do next.

As the year comes to an end, it’s important to take a moment and reflect on your life since January. Consider the promises you made to yourself at the beginning of the year and ask yourself how many of them you have been able to achieve. Identify the hindrances that stood in your way and analyze the limitations you faced in order to overcome them. By doing this, you can gain a better understanding of your progress and set goals for the upcoming year.

As a wise philosopher once said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” Have you noticed any habits that have silently worked their way into your life that you know are preventing you from achieving your dreams? Have you entered into any relationships that you know will hinder your personal growth? It’s time to take a step back and reflect on your life, just like the prodigal son did. This will allow you to make concrete decisions about your life and move forward with purpose.

Often, in order to access God’s wisdom during moments of decision, it is necessary to take time for reflection. The answers we seek are often on the other side of our busy lifestyle, shut out from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
